What We Do
Empowering Lawyers, Human Rights Defenders, and Civil Society
ILN seeks to strengthen legal institutions, civil society, support legal professionals, foster respect for human rights, and advance public understanding of the law and citizens’ rights.
Through responsive, practice-oriented training and mentorship, ILN equips lawyers, legal professionals, and human rights defenders from diverse legal fields with contemporary legal knowledge, international standards, and the analytical tools necessary for rights-centred, rule of law compliant legal practice. Its programmes are designed to be responsive to local needs and to prioritize sustainable solutions to pressing rule of law and human rights challenges, using rigorous and innovative approaches, including mentorships and accessing alternative legal literature for strong professional ethics, critical thinking skills, and practical experience.
Legal Defense and Strategic Litigations
ILN advances the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms through legal defense and strategic litigation at national and international levels.
ILN provides free online legal aid and legal support while also pursuing precedent-setting cases before international courts to challenge systemic human rights abuses. Through this combined approach, ILN works to strengthen legal safeguards and expand access to justice for civil society actors, lawyers, human rights defenders, journalists, activists, and other vulnerable groups.
Research, Documentation and Advocacy
ILN monitors, documents, and exposes systemic human rights violations in Azerbaijan and advances accountability through national and international advocacy.
ILN monitors legal developments and documents human rights–related issues in Azerbaijan, with a focus on analysing laws, practices, and institutional processes in light of constitutional and international standards. By maintaining a secure and well-structured archive and engaging constructively with regional and international mechanisms, including the European Court of Human Rights and UN bodies, ILN supports informed advocacy, legal analysis, and the effective implementation of human rights commitments.
Our Commitment
Through these interconnected areas of work, ILN strives to build a resilient ecosystem that protects human rights, advances the rule of law, and ensures that legal professionals can operate independently and effectively in the face of systemic challenges.
